What Aerial Cinematography Looks Like on Set – Behind the Scenes with Lithium Aerials
When most people think of drones, they imagine wide shots of landscapes or flyovers — but aerial cinematography goes far beyond that. At Lithium Aerials, we specialize in precision drone work built specifically for cinema, commercial, and high-end branded content — and we’re giving you a peek behind the scenes.
From Planning to Execution: What Goes Into the Shot
Every production begins with understanding the director’s vision. Whether we’re flying FPV drones through a moving car convoy, or hovering our Alta X with a full cinema package over a night-lit stage, we tailor the rig and flight path to the storytelling needs of each project.
We collaborate directly with DPs, 1st ADs, and producers to ensure safe integration into the camera and lighting plan. Nothing is templated. Everything is cinematic.
Our Go-To Tools for Aerial Cinematography
We fly a variety of cinema-grade drones depending on the shoot:
Inspire 3: For fast setup, dual operator control, and ProRes workflows
Alta X: For heavy lift, dynamic lighting, and big-camera flexibility
Custom FPV rigs: Designed in-house for aggressive chase shots and compact interiors

Crew Communication is Everything
Behind every fluid drone shot is a team that’s tightly dialed in. Our success on set comes from the real-time communication between the pilot, camera operator, and production team.
We operate with clear protocols:
Pilot and camera op are on comms constantly — tracking movement cues, timing, and subject framing.
We integrate with walkie channels or IFB, so we’re never out of sync with the 1st AD or DP.
Rehearsals are fast, focused, and precise — even on complex blocking days.
This kind of coordination ensures that when the action rolls, we’re not guessing — we’re aligned with the shot.
Safety, FAA Compliance & Trust
We're fully FAA Part 107 certified and operate under 55lb and over 55lb waivers. Whether filming in downtown Los Angeles, at a private ranch, or on the Vegas Strip — we handle permitting, insurance, and airspace clearances.
